THE GOODWILL CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION
Investing in Children. Restoring Hope. Building Brighter Futures.
Sussex, Freetown Peninsula, Sierra Leone
Every child deserves an opportunity to learn, grow, feel protected, and pursue a future filled with possibilities. Unfortunately, many children grow up facing circumstances that make even the most basic necessities difficult to obtain. Poverty, limited educational opportunities, child labor, and inadequate family resources can place enormous obstacles between children and the futures they deserve.
It is in response to these challenges that the Goodwill Children’s Foundation has sought to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable and less-privileged children in Sierra Leone.
Located in Sussex on the Freetown Peninsula, the foundation was established in 2016 with a mission centered on helping children who are living in difficult circumstances, including orphans and children from economically disadvantaged families.
Under the leadership of Foday Korombo Kamara, Director, the foundation has sought to bring attention to the needs of children who are often overlooked and to encourage individuals, organizations, and compassionate members of the community to become part of the solution.
A Mission That Goes Beyond Charity
The work of helping children must extend beyond providing temporary relief. It must also address the circumstances that prevent children from developing into healthy, educated, confident, and productive members of society.
The foundation’s historically reported objectives include:
-
Supporting vulnerable children: Helping orphans and children from disadvantaged households who lack access to basic necessities.
-
Promoting education: Encouraging parents to recognize the importance of education and helping children gain access to schooling and educational supplies.
-
Combating child labor: Advocating for the protection of children from exploitation and circumstances that deprive them of their childhood.
-
Protecting girls and boys: Raising awareness about the dangers of child exploitation, prostitution, and early marriage.
-
Supporting struggling families: Seeking ways to reduce the economic pressures that prevent parents from adequately caring for their children.
-
Building community partnerships: Encouraging cooperation among community leaders, families, charitable organizations, and individuals who share a commitment to children’s welfare.
-
Meeting Basic Needs, Creating Opportunities
For children living in economically challenging circumstances, the difference between having an opportunity and being left behind can sometimes come down to the simplest things.
A child needs food to grow, clothing to feel comfortable, school supplies to learn, and a supportive environment in which to develop.
Historically reported outreach activities have included food assistance, with donated supplies such as rice, cooking oil, onions, biscuits, and juice.
These acts of generosity demonstrate an important principle: meaningful change does not always begin with enormous resources. Sometimes it begins with someone recognizing a need and deciding to respond.
But the vision must extend further.
The long-term aspiration is to help children move beyond survival and toward stability, education, personal development, and independence.
The Importance of Community Involvement
No single individual or organization can address every challenge facing vulnerable children.
Sustainable progress requires the involvement of an entire community.
Parents, educators, religious institutions, charitable organizations, local leaders, and concerned individuals all have a role to play in protecting children and helping them reach their potential.
The Goodwill Children’s Foundation has historically expressed a desire to establish networks and partnerships that can strengthen its ability to address the challenges confronting disadvantaged children.
Such cooperation is essential because the needs of children are not limited to one household, one village, or one community.
When people work together, resources can be shared, opportunities can be expanded, and more children can receive the support they need.
A Shared Responsibility: Protecting the Next Generation
At House of Judah International Fellowship Church, we recognize that caring for vulnerable members of our communities is an important expression of compassion, responsibility, and service.
Children are not responsible for the economic circumstances into which they are born. They should not have to sacrifice their education, safety, or childhood because of poverty.
We believe that communities become stronger when their children are protected, educated, encouraged, and given opportunities to succeed.
Our interest in highlighting charitable work is rooted in the understanding that service must extend beyond words. Compassion should inspire action, and concern for others should lead to meaningful efforts that improve lives.
We encourage our members, families, and visitors to learn about the needs of vulnerable children in Sierra Leone and to recognize the importance of responsible, transparent, and sustainable charitable outreach.
Looking Toward the Future
The needs of children are ongoing, and so must be the commitment to helping them.
The vision associated with the Goodwill Children’s Foundation presents an opportunity to continue conversations about education, child protection, food security, family support, and community development.
The future of any nation is connected to the opportunities provided to its children today.
Every child deserves the opportunity to dream beyond their present circumstances. Every child deserves encouragement. Every child deserves a chance.
Together, we can help build a future in which fewer children are forgotten, more families are supported, and more young lives are given the opportunity to flourish.
